What does the Virginia Residential Building license require?
Three license classes by job size: Class A, B, C (54.1-1100). A Class A license can be issued in residential building (RBC), commercial building (CBC), highway/heavy (H/H), electrical (ELE), plumbing (PLB), HVAC (HVA), fire sprinkler (SPR) or specialty (54.1-1106(F)), and dozens of specialties such as home improvement (HIC), commercial improvement (CIC) and roofing (ROC) are added by designation (18VAC50-22-20, -30). One state board (Board for Contractors, DPOR) covers all trades.2
Exam
The designated employee (age 18+, full-time employee or in responsible management) of a Class A or B firm must pass the board-approved business exam (Va. Code 54.1-1106(E), 54.1-1108; 18VAC50-22-50 B, -60 B).3
Bond
No license bond.4
